Pre-School Activities
with
Candace Whitman Books

Here are some simple activities to go with Candace Whitman
books. These accommodate a range of ages.
"Tear into" Collages
(Ages 3-5)
A simple way to have children explore the
blending and tearing techniques I use in my collages.
Use food coloring dropped on
coffee filters to imitate the effect of watercolor on rice paper (or use the real thing if
your budget allows!) Allow the colors to run into one another and observe the colors two
make when mixed. Experiment: try wetting filter first for extra blending.
Once filter or paper is dry,
tear gently into shapes and glue on another piece of construction or colored
paper. Invite children to create designs or images of their choosing.
Color, Language and Movement
(Ages 5-7)
Clear space in room for children to
move about. Ask them walk across room with a certain feeling in mind: happy, sad,
angry, sleepy, sneaky. Then have them turn themselves into a color. What does the
color feel like? Move like? What sound does it make? What about another color?
A follow up
activity with poetry or color is suitable for older children in the primary
grades. After acting out color, have them sit in a circle and free associate words that
come to mind
when they hear the word "blue" for example, and create a class poem about
blue.
