Be a Color Detective!
Once your children know their colors, what's next? Identifying red,
yellow, and blue is just the beginning. You can teach them about varieties of
color, and how to create these beautiful ranges themselves when doing their own
painting and art work.
The rich variety of color in our world is something children understand
intuitively, but need help to have it made accessible.
This website includes an activity for your children or young students
that will equip them for the full experience and use of color. The
outline is intended to be led by classroom or art teachers, but can be adapted
by parents who want to stimulate children's perception at home.
LEARNING AIM: To help children identify varieties of color that share
the same "family" name ("school bus yellow", "fire
engine red", "lime green").
SKILL ACQUIRED: Once this knowledge is made accessible,
children will be able to increase the range of color they use in their own
artwork, and increase their powers of expression.
NOTE: This lesson is a stand-alone, but also works well when followed up by
reading one of the books from MY FIRST COLORS, Yellow and You, Ready for Red,
and Bring on the Blue.
